Delayed opening & Emergency closing

We want to be organized and prepared in the event of snowstorms and the possibility of early dismissals, delayed openings and emergency closings. We have developed the following procedure to ensure smooth and efficient communication. Most frequently, our emergency phone chain is used to close or delay opening due to bad weather. However, there are a number of events that could make it necessary for us to cancel care at Oak Lane. For example, we are not allowed to operate if electric, water or telephone service is interrupted.

The Phone Chain

The phone chain is usually used first thing in the morning for emergency closings and delayed openings. The chain will be initiated by a phone call from Ronnie or Therese to the first parent on each class list, usually around 6:00 a.m.

  1. As soon as you get the call, call the next parent on your list. Please pay attention to the day of the week on the phone list as some people are part-time, and those are listed under the Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday headings
  2. If you get an answering machine or a child, leave a message but call the next person on the list until you speak to an adult who can continue the chain. If you don’t speak to an adult, the chain may break down and people won’t know we’re closed or delayed.
  3. We issue updated lists each time there is an enrollment change in your child's classroom. If you get a new list, please make sure you put it in a safe place and discard the old one.

The Radio Broadcast

We also have the delay/closing announced on the radio. The station is WFAS (103.9FM, 106.3FM, and 1230AM) or log onto www.wfasfm.com or www.wfasam.com and look for the storm center school closings link. Please be aware that child care centers are usually announced last. So, for the fastest and most accurate information, it is best to rely on the phone chain.

Our Website

In addition, barring electrical failure which would prevent us from accessing our site, the delay/closing will be listed on the main page of our own website, at http://www.oaklaneccc.com.

Early Dismissal

In cases where Oak Lane needs to close once the day has already begun, EARLY DISMISSAL CALLS will be initiated by Ronnie and Therese in the office to the parent’s work/home numbers listed on the child's emergency cards. Please be sure we have current work/home phone numbers including alternate numbers (cell phone, beeper, secretary) where you may be reached. Also, please remember that if you are going to be away from your place of work you need to let your head teacher and the office know how to reach you.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation. If you should have any questions or concerns, please ask.
